Welcome to the Society of Physics Students

Established at The University of California at Riverside on November 7th, 2007, the Society of Physics Students (SPS) provides undergraduates and graduates from all disciplines the opportunity to expand their knowledge of physics and to meet other students, professors and researches in the physics field. Weekly meetings provide a dynamic and interactive environment to discuss physics-related topics. To experience the physics field in the real world we ogranize field trips to laboratories, particle accerlerators, observatories and other institutions. Talks and colloquia given by proffessors, researchers and proffessionals are scheduled throughout the year and will usually take place durring normal meeting times.

  • UCR Physics Open House!
UCR Physics is hosting open house on Saturday March 10th and Saturday April 14th! As a result, we're looking for knowledgable, friendly volunteers! If you're interested please contact Steven Tjung!
  • Physics Department T-Shirts
The Physics department is looking for a new T-Shirt design for all of the volunteers to wear at the open house! If you've come up with a design submit it to Steven Tjung or bring it to one of the meetings! We'll decide upon the best shirt and get them made!
  • SPS Ski Trip! February 4
SPS is having our annual ski trip on February 4th! For more information please contact Steven Tjung.
  • SPS Thanksgiving Potluck PicturesThe Thanksgiving Potluck was a huge success. We'd like to thank all of you for attending and hope to see you all at our next event!
  • Register On http://studentorgnetwork.ucr.edu
Don't forget ot register yourself in SPS through the UCR Student Organization Network. Registering helps out by informing Student Life of our members so that we are more widely recognized on campus! Simply visit the Student Org Network, sign in with your UCR Net-ID and Password, and join/renew your membership.
  • October 6, 2011 - SPS Social and Movie Night
Next Thursday at 6:30 we are going to have a get together in the reading room. We will have drinks and pizza for everyone. We will hang out and have dinner then watch a movie. Come, relax and meet your fellow sps members.
  • October 2 - Hiking trip up to the "C"
Come join us on our first annual hiking trip up to the "C" on Sunday Oct. 2nd. We will be meeting in the physics courtyard at 9:00 am and leaving around 9:30. Wear athletic clothing and shoes that you can walk in (No Sneakers please) and bring plenty of water. If you have any questions email webmasterspsucr@gmail.com.
  • SPS meeting time for the fall quarter
We have decided to hold the meetings for the fall quarter on Thursdays at 3:00 in the physics reading room. I know that this may not accomodate everyones schedule but we plan to take alot of the focus off of the meetings this quarter and put it more into activities. Even if you are not able to come to the meetings I hope to see you at one of the many events we will hold this quarter and throughout the year. If you have any questions you can email me or any of the officers.

  • SPS room and lounge
Soon we will be opening our very own lounge and study room. We are still waiting on a few things like chairs and key card door access but hopefull this will all be sorted by the second week of school. Our goal for this room is to provide a place where any sps club members can relax with eachother, work on homework together, and we will even be organizing times when someone will be available to answer questions and help out with problems you might be stuck on. I plan to have a sign up sheet either on the door or in the room that you can check to see if someone will be there to help. The SPS room will be located in 2054E.

UC Riverside Physicists Discover New Way to Produce Antimatter-containing Atom
New method allows positronium to be produced for the first time at a wide range of temperatures and in a controllable way (July 11, 2011) NEWS MEDIA CONTACT Name: Iqbal Pittalwala Tel: (951) 827-6050 E-mail: iqbal@ucr.edu EnlargeL to R: Researchers Tomu H. Hisakado, Harry Tom, Allen Mills and David Cassidy. Photo credit: M. Kelley, UCR Strategic Communications. RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Physicists at the University of California, Riverside report that they have discovered a new way to create positronium, an exotic and short-lived atom that could help answer what happened to antimatter in the universe and why nature favored matter over antimatter at the universe's creation. Positronium is made up of an electron and its antimatter twin, the positron. It has applications in developing more accurate Positron Emission Tomography or PET scans and in fundamental physics research.

Tevatron Experiment Could Send Particle Physicists Back to the Drawing Board
If the existence of a previously unknown particle is confirmed, it would be the first particle that does not fit into the standard model of particle physics, said UC Riverside physics and astronomy professor John Ellison. The standard model of particle physics is a theory of three of the four known fundamental interactions and the elementary particles that take part in these interactions. These particles make up all visible matter in the universe.
